By searching over some google groups, I have found a source and dumps for Canon Cat, a realy nice old machine. And in few days, we have keyboard working, posibility of going into diagnostics mode, video is emulated fine. Here are some screens to show how it all looks :

I last month I have been adding lot of "skeleton" drivers from ROM dumps that are available, some are of already emulated machines, but there is quite number of totaly forgoten and unemulated.

I have tried to add at some code, to at least show screen after booting.

Just made a driver for one old GDR (East Germany) machine, named LLC2. Since this one is using a keyboard K7659 that is used by most other GDR machines, this was a good point to start.

Thanks to Dejan Nikolic who gave his machine on testing to me, and Sveto Nilovic for making introduction to Dejan, we finally have Pecom 64 emulation.

This was a product of Ei Nis. Machine was mostly used in schools. Assume that there is at least some school made software, so it would be nice if someone could send me WAV rips of cassettes.

A new clone of Mikro-80 have been added today.
This one has a different keyboard controler logic and there is sound speaker.
There is also a ROM programmer which is not yet supported.

As previous this is also a MESS exclusive.

Two more new clones have been added to MESS, they both use new keyboard type (MS7007), one is 32k version and other is 16k.

Since Orion is also using both keyboards (RK and MS7007) code is now reused.

Now two more variants of Radio-86RK are supported.

First one is for ROM disk version that is published in Radio Magazine 1991 No.10.

To implement this there were lot of things that should be changed and implemented.

First was Intel 8257 DMA controller autoload mode. Since this is part of MAME core first must be checked in their code so this machine will be available after next MAME release.

2nd thing to implement was 8275 CRT controller. For now there is a partial implementation which I am still improving.

Please note that video mode is 78 x 30 chars, but not all have content that is why you see border on images, so it looks same as on real machine.

Finaly I got time to sit and make real video emulation for Glaksija. Since it is done on 6MHz you will get only real speed emulation using MESS, however while loading page interrupts are disabled so you can always speed it up.

Also Glaksija plus initial support is added (that I forgot after writing first post :) )

But most important thing is that GTP file format is now supported so real games for Galaksija could be loaded.

Before I have start any work on Spectrum clones I have decided that it is best to split it to multiple files, since it was realy large and hard to maintain. Also there were lot of things that could be rewriten since MAME/MESS core changed a lot since these drivers are updated last time.

After that I made some changes on Scorpion which made it boot properly (giving next screen while booting)

And also made TRDOS boots. Problem was that shadow rom was not supported by driver so this was not possible.

NMI button is added so access to service menu is possible.

Bug fixing weekend

Lot of time since last update, but here is the list of things that have been done:
1. Since there was no way to implement keyboard had to ask Aaron to implement vector sending on IRQ, which he did in very short period.

2. BK0010 and FDD version just keep initializing, which was very odd, after close looking into code I have found that there was few errors in T11 implementation. HALT and illegal operation were not implemented right, and MARK instruction was missing, after I have done that changes all started to work fine. I have already sent patch to Aaron and he confirmed change will be in next MAME release.

3. As these things enabled me to work, I have made tape loading in driver, so I have finally able to load some games, for now only in WAV format

4. Thing that was very annoying last few weeks is that WD17xx did not work as expected, so for example in Orion driver if auto boot ROM was selected, floppy did not boot, also when loading some games it just stuck. I was checking what is going on and found that BUSY was not set right away when read/write sector commands were called, that made code, which directly after sending command is waiting for ready status, not able to perform well. Hope this will solve issues other have with floppy.

5. Finally I added tape support to Orion so now it is possible to load RKO files and WAVs as well.

First would be implementation of Erik computer, it is Z80 based Specialist clone.
For now I can't find any specific program for it, but at Specialist games are working fine on it.

Next thing is NC ROM disk for Specialist MX, and also one memory bank switch bug has been fixed, which enable normal work of some application such as Basic MX.

And finaly, I have started work on Bashkiria-2M driver.
For now here is boot screen.

This is ROM6 from Specialist collection. Thing is that in this case video memory starts at 0x8000 (on standard model it starts at 0x9000). It would be nice if someone could help finding out what model is this.

In past two days (did not spent much time on it), I have made use of cassette for Galaksija and Orao. For now only the reading is working and in WAV format. Soon will finish support for other available formats for those two machines.
For Galeb I will also do it, but main problem is that I do not have any existing "real" Galeb tape yet.

Galaksija real video

Last two days I was working on implementing real video emulation for Galaksija, since there was a hack used for it till now.

Hardware for it is simple, video output is generated by shift register.
There is a clock generator at 6144000Hz (when divided by 2 is used as clock for Z80 CPU) which is used to shift register for video signal generator.

Width of line is 384 ticks and each horizontal line beginning is shifted by some number of ticks (9 * 8 ticks for Galaksija ROM1), this shift is configurable and ROM2 and Glaksija plus change this value. Also there are two empty lines in beginning of video info.

Idea for implementing this is to do exact thing what real hardware do. We will first make periodic interrupt:

This one is working, only problem is implementation of Z80 CPU since it will set value of latch in wrong moment (on the beginning of executing instruction LD (HL),A , since on real one it is done at the end), that is why we now have first char in line displayed twice, and some minor glitches in 13th lines of char.

Now have to think how to solve that. Idea is not to change Z80 CPU implementation, but also it should be as much as possible like in real life.

Romanian computers

Yesterday I have received quite large number of ROM's (from Romanian computers from 80's and 90's) from Valentin H. All of them are some kind of Spectrum clones, so all that should be done is to connect ROM's to right places :)

So I have done that today, now CIP03, HC85, HC90, HC91 and Jet-EM are supported.

For other ROM's I need to spend more time since they are not just ROM replacements.

When these 5 were supported I have thought, why shouldn’t I try to find more of clone ROM's myself, so I have start browsing, and found few more.

So now Didaktik Gama and Didaktik M from ex Czechoslovakia, machines now boots ok, but still need to find right info about memory, since one source seas that there is 80KB of RAM.

Will work on this.

Orao and Galeb

As you may see in last post link (on Josip site), well he also made a emulator for Galeb and Orao himself (Orao have source code too), and since ROMs where there I have decided to write that also.

His source was a good guide, but I have made quite different implementation, still MESS is all about accuracy, that's why I have for example decided to support keyboard as it was on original (for example Galeb have only two cursor keys, only left and down , to get up and right you need to press shift) and it since it was QWERTZ that is how it is now used by emulator too.

Also by debugging I have found that sound is made by DAC so now it sounds more like real machine.

Since almost all info could be found on one place it was one day job to make these two.

Need to work on tape support and then it is complete.

P.S. As you may note all posts have same date, well thing is I have made my blog after I have implemented these two.

Galaksija plus

So as it "should" be done first I have decided to support some domestic computer.
As there is already support for Galaksija inside MESS I tought that best idea would be to write extension for improved model of it.

I have found lot of info regarding this computer in computer magazines in which even schematic is available. To see yourself click here

But main problem is that I could not find ROM C anywhere on web. Then I have tried to contact one person that I saw build one Galaksija himself, and yes he responded :)

First I have made memory maps as described by magazine and made a connection to AY-3-8910. And guess what it sings now. Also I was annoyed by white tick line at the end of screen and then I saw that it seas 218 lines for graphics, but in documentation and by manual calculation it can be seen that it is only 208 lines, so that is also fixed now.

Since graphics is implemented with "hack" I have decided to leave it like that for now and keep this driver with GAME_NOT_WORKING status since high graphics mode is still not implemented.

Well I have decided to start writing some MESS drivers of my own.
I was analyzing a list of supported computers and thing I have found is that there is quite few of computers from "Eastern block" so think it is good way to start, let's support as much as possible.
Think I need some help from others as well. ROM dumping needs to be done for lot of them since small number of ROM's are currently available.
